Before class time on Friday, please leave a comment on this post in which you address the following:
Based on the examples we've read and the discussions we've had in class so far, list at least 3 possible topics that you could see yourself writing about for this assignment. Tell us a little bit about each topic and why it would make a good topic (or not). You aren't tied to any of the topics you list here --- this is just to make sure you're considering multiple options before deciding on THE topic.

The three topics I am considering for my memoir are the memories made by my mom's cooking, my experiences in Beaver Creek,Colorado with food, and my grandmother's cooking.
I think i'm either going to write about my really big aunt Silvia and her obsession with food, food and my immediate family or my memories of food and my dad. My aunt would probably make a good topic because I have so many specific memories of her and food. Her life is pretty much centered around food and I think she's on the verge of eating herself to death. I have so many thoughts and feelings about that specific topic... Food was the cause of some arguments in my immediate family, mainly because my mother never knew what to cook and we all could never agree on one thing. Needless to say, what we ate and how we ate was pretty different from your traditional family. I do believe this would make an interesting topic as well. The topic of food and my dad comes from my memories of the time that we shared cooking before and even after him and my mom divorced. Cooking with him is one of my best memories.
Sorry, I forgot to describe them. My first choice, mom's cooking would be a good choice because that is the one I've had the most experience with; I've grown up with her amazing cooking since I was a little girl. My memories from Colorado would be a good choice as well because I was with my best friend, who is now the person I eat with all the time because we are roommates. Also,I would be able to talk about how different my eating habits were from skiing. Finally, my other choice, the time spent with my grandmother cooking together and her preparing meals for our family at holidays is just very special to me and something I will never foget!
My first idea is a Christmas lunch tradition with another family to the Palace Cafe in New Orleans. Our families have known each other for many years and the food and company had is always great. My second is our Thursday dinner tradition at my neighbor’s house. They are like my second family, we bring appetizers, my parents bring some wine, and we all get together to have a nice relaxing night. My third would have to be my own home. When my Mom cooks I really get to appreciate all the time and love that she puts into each dish. I also get to help her with anything, which usually involves me going to the grocery store for something she has forgotten.
I'm thinking about writing about many different things. The very first idea that comes to my mind is the weekly pizza dinners we do at the Abide's (my cousin's) house. We've carried on this tradition every since I can remember and the food is always incredible and the company is even better. The second idea is my own family's cooking. Usually we have a sit down dinner and it consists of some form of chicken, rice, and broccoli. The third idea I have is the traditional Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma Sue and Grandpa's. Poor ole Grandma Sue always forgets to turn the oven on and the whole thing ends up a mess! All three would be fun and interesting to write about so I'm not sure how I will be able to choose!
The three things I am considering are my Pa-ou's cooking, cooking with my Dad, and my roommates cooking experience. I would choose my Pa-ou's cooking because he is one of the best cooks I know, but he didn't even start cooking til after my Granny died. My Dad is a fireman and cooking at the fire house is always fun and adventurous. They are always trying to make new things. Lastly, I would choose my roommates' cooking experiences. They do not cook much, but they all have their own specialty dish that they make for all of us once a month.
I think I could make an interesting paper using my either my grandmother’s house, eating with my friends (eating fast foods), or going out to Mike Anderson’s. I really am leaning towards talking about my experiences with my friends and how, where, what, and when (or how often) we eat together. There’s so much more I could tell here. I also think that writing about my family members at my grandmother’s house would be an awesome topic because it’s mch more personal. Mike Anderson’s is a great restaurant, but it’s not really the food that makes it so memorable so I don’t think I could really have a firm foundation with this topic either. Also, it’s a bit narrower topic because I don’t go there as often.
One thing I am considering writing about is Sunday mid-mournings at my parents house, my mom always cooks big breakfasts. Now since I have moved out I still go over most Sundays to eat. Another possibility for me to write about is eating at my grandparents house with all of my family on holidays. A third possibility for a topic would be going to buffalo wild wings (or some other sports bar) about once a week with a particular group of buddies. We stay for a few hours and watch whichever game is on and eat and drink beers.
I think I'm going to write about either Sunday dinners at my Uncle Terry's, Cooking with my roommate Colin, or the time I ate out with my friend Dave's family.
Sunday dinner at my uncles is what I'm most likely going to write about bc even though my parents are there I feel like I'm getting to know my extended family better and I really enjoy the food.
Moving in with my roommate Colin was just a culinary disaster because he can't cook anything so we had some interesting times trying to figure stuff out together.
And, lastly, I don't get many opportunities to eat out with someone else's entire family so it was fun to watch their customs and see how they interact together as a family in opposition to my own.
Three topics that I am considering using for our first paper are: 1) Sunday lunch at my grandma's house after church when I was little.---Before Hurricane Katrina, my family and I lived around the corner from my grandma (my mom's mom). Ever since I was born until I was about 17 we went to eat lunch at my grandma's house after church. She would always have a huge variety of food on the table and it was always an interesting experience going there. 2) My dad's cooking and passion for cooking. ---My dad has always loved cooking and has loved creating and preparing a variety of foods. He loves to teach others how to cook as well; he is the one who has taught me everything I know so far about cooking. 3) Holiday meals with my dad's side of the family. ---My dad is one of nine children and every holiday meal is bigger and greater than the previous. Almost every one of my dad's siblings and my mamere (grandma) cooks amazing (mostly Cajun and southern) dishes. I am not sure which one of these topics I am going to choose yet because they are all so meaningful to me! I will definitely need some help choosing!!
One topic I’m considering is the cooking of my grandparents. I have memories out the wazoo; I’ve been around countless times watching them make spaghetti sauce, cookies, cannolis, pastas, pretty much everything Italian. Another topic I am contemplating is Christmas dinner. Jeez, where to begin with Christmas dinner… it’s basically everyone in my family with just about every kind of food. My last topic of consideration is my experience severing food and bartending at a wedding. It was the first time I ever bartended and I really enjoyed it.
Cooking with my dad is one of the topics that I am leaning towards. Growing up with my dad I never wanted to learn how to cook until about high school. He has taught me many, many cooking tips and I have great stories to share. All of my adventures with Mr. Jay come to mind for my second topic. Mr. Jay and I have been through everything there is to go through with cooking and in every kind of environment. Last but not least is my college cooking career. I can’t even start to tell you how much fun and excitement there is on this topic. I have messed up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich since I have been in college.
I am considering writing about either eating holiday dinners with my family (Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, or Easter), my grandma attempting to teach me to make homemade pickles (just fyi, I don't cook at all, so that was a huge task), or eating boiled seafood at my grandparents' house. Eating holiday dinners with my family is a tradition we have always had. My dad does not get along with my mom's side of the family: so my mom, sister, and I eat Thanksgiving dinner with her side of the family and then go over to his parents to visit; the three of us spend Christmas Eve with her side of the family and all four of us spend Christmas Day at his parents; and the three of us spend Easter and New Years with her family.
My grandparents have a huge garden and one of the things they grow is cucumbers. My grandma loves making bread and butter pickles and I love eating them. One day she decided it was time I learned how to cook something and had the bright idea for pickles. I had to do everything, including going out in the garden and pick the cucumbers.
I'm my grandparents’ favorite, so whenever I ask my grandpa to get either shrimp, crabs, or crawfish to boil he pretty much does. Somehow, everyone in the family has seafood radar and come over to eat the seafood. Whoever can peel the fastest eats the most, there is no saving food there (except if everyone gets there before me, my grandpa saves me the biggest ones and waits until I get there to boil them).
I am considering writing about a restaurant in New Orleans called the Camellia Grill. It is a local hotspot that serves breakfast and lunch. It has long hours and is mostly used by locals. You can meet some very interesting people. I also am considering writing about my friend’s family kitchen. I stayed with the Napoli’s after Hurricane Katrina. Everything revolves around their kitchen. Thirdly I am thinking about comparing and contrasting my mom’s side of the family with my dad’s side. Both families have very different views on food.
Three topics that I could potentially write about would be the cuisine in Nicaragua, my younger sister’s cooking, or my grandmother’s cooking. The reason I thought about Nicaraguan cuisine is because the food over there is so different & growing up there I was hesitant at first to try it. Once I finally did, I realized what I would have been missing out on. My sister’s cooking intrigues me because she takes after my mother in that respect. She is 16 years old and can make some pretty mouth-watering dishes while I’m useless in the kitchen. My grandmother was also a topic of interest because my mother and my aunts learned everything they know about cooking from my grandma; without her passing along that tradition, my knowledge of food today may have been even more narrow than it already is.
The first topic I am considering writing about for my food memoir is the large family celebration that we share with my mom's side of the family every Thanksgiving. Every year, we get together and everyone brings a dish. Most of the time, each person will bring their "signature dish" that everyone knows and loves. The second topic I am considering writing about involves one of my good friends Melanie. She has a love for cooking, and has encouraged me to want to learn more and more about it all the time. She has also been a good influence on me in learning to eat more healthy. The last topic I am considering writing about is a tradition I had growing up at "Maurice's Bakery Shop" in New Orleans. My uncle used to bring us there everytime we came in town to visit him, and Maurice, the baker, got to know me very well and would make me signature chocolate sprinkle pastries that I loved.
The first topic that I am considering is one of my friends named Dana. She is one of the the most entertaining people I know, and one of the things I love most about her is the way she relates food to every element in her life. The would be the best topic out of the three because I know so many stories and details about Dana and food. She has made me like food more than anyone. The next topic is my mother. She has cooked her entire life. When I think about my mom, the image of her in the kitchen cooking is the first to come to mind. The last topic is my middle sister Kim and her husband Chris. Kim inherited the good cooking genes from my mom, and Chris is a country boy from Rayville that has a passion for eating/cooking. At family functions, Kim is in the kitchen cooking while Chris is outside on his enourmous grill/pit grilling food.
i think i am going to write about either my stepmother and how amazing she is in the kitchen and how she has taught me so many useful skills. I am also thinking about writing about all of the fun times that i had in my cooking class last semester and all of the people i got to meet. By the end of the class we were all so close and it was the food that brought us all together. my third option to write about is my friend tyghe because we both love food and we could talk about food all day long. We always go to whole foods together to go shopping and we end up staying there for hours
I have many memories with food. I am considering writing about my mom’s cooking as it is her passion, my crazy nights at the Abide’s house, and the fun times with my family gatherings. My mom loves to cook; it is one of her favorite past times. She would make a great topic to write about because her story with cooking is very detailed. I could also write about going to the Abide’s house for dinner. Every Friday our family’s get together eat homemade pizza, and laugh and converse. My family would be great to write about, because growing up we did everything together. We always had family gatherings, all of which revolved around food.
My ideas for my first essay consist of: 1. My roomate and the difficulties we have with being healthy living in the sorority house. I think this would be a good topic because it is current and an important part of my life right now. 2. My mom and dad's cooking and how it affected my life. Growing up it was helpful always having someone cook for you and keep you healthy. It also saved a lot of money because we did not have to go out to eat every night. I think this would be a great topic also because it leads to my eating habbits today as well. 3. The last idea I had was to write about the food I had to eat in middle school. It was cafeteria food that was disgustng and we were not allowed to bring our own lunches unless we had a doctor's excuse. This would be a good topic because I could focus more on middle school and attending a new school for the first time and include the eating habbits that go along with it.
I am thinking about writing about my dad's experience with cooking and how becoming the only parent affected that. I am also thinking about writing about my friends family because his dad is from Mexico and the culture and food is so different there. The last thing I am thinking about is my roommate's lifestyle and outlook on food. He is a hunter and a fisher and has many different opinions about animals and food than I do.
The one topic I am just about dead set on writing on is my papaw’s non-traditional Christmas dinner of fried shrimp that has now become quite the tradition in our family. Ever since I came back to Baton Rouge, all I can think about is my Papaw’s fried shrimp so maybe if I tell him I’m writing a paper on them he’ll pop a few in the fryer and I’ll have some Mardi Gras shrimp to celebrate! I’m also considering writing on this restaurant in my hometown called the Dew Drop Inn, home of the infamous “Cheeseburger in Paradise” that Jimmy Buffett sings about, who just happened to be my Aunt’s first true love. My dad and I have eaten at this little run down restaurant every Friday of my life since I have been able to eat a burger; unfortunately we only make the trip about once a month now. I’m also thinking about writing on this snack my best friend Caitlind and I make called “Muddy Buddies,” and just write about the things we have done while we eat or make this snack.
The three topics I'm considering writing about in my food memoir are my brother's Italian Restaurant, my family's Easter crawfish boils, or Disney World food experiences. I'm just trying to figure out which topic would be more interesting for someone other than myself to read.
